Sun Safe Poster Contest

Utah's incidence of the potentially deadly skin cancer, melanoma, is the highest in the country. Our environment offers fantastic outdoor opportunities, so we need to teach our children to enjoy the outdoors while protecting themselves from the intense ultraviolet light, which can cause skin cancer.

As a way of teaching children through their own artwork, we are thrilled to present our sixth annual statewide sun protection poster contest. Sun Safe Utah is partnering with the University of Utah Department of Dermatology and the Huntsman Cancer Institute to present this contest. Over the past three years alone, over 4,000 Utah schoolchildren participated.

Our website (uofuhealth.org/sunsafe) outlines the details, including fabulous prizes, but here is a summary:

1. Children ages kindergarten- eighth grade are eligible to enter the poster contest.
2. All submissions must be received by April 17th, 2017.
3. The submitted poster should:
  • be on a 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper
  • be original and drawn by hand
  • have the entry form attached to the back
  • show at least 3 Sun Safety Action Steps (listed on our website)

Working together from many angles, we can decrease the incidence of melanoma in Utah without limiting outdoor activities. Our hope is that you will forward this information to your teachers and they will either be able to work this into the curriculum, or simply make the children aware of this opportunity. We are also able to arrange guests to visit your classrooms to educate children on sun safety. We appreciate your consideration of this project and look forward to some fantastic posters and videos from your students!
